Intimate Miracles - Dean Dill & Tim Trono

Originally published nearly 30 years ago, Intimate Miracles has long been difficult to find. Now, this remarkable collection of Dean Dill's magic returns in a completely redesigned hardcover edition featuring four additional routines, improved explanations, newly commissioned illustrations carefully created to match the style of those drawn by Dean's father for the original edition, and the original foreword by Johnny Carson.

Within the magic community, Dean Dill became synonymous with legendary creations such as Dean's Box, Explosion, and Blizzard. These weren't simply tricks. They were benchmarks. They fooled everyone. Yet they represent only a fraction of his extraordinary work.

Dean wasn't simply a magician who fooled other magicians. He was a working performer. The material in this book is the magic he performed professionally, refined through years of experience, and trusted when it mattered most—including his unforgettable appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson.

The Tonight Show: Learn Dean's entire Tonight Show act, beat for beat. Discover his stand-up silk routine in which one silk is repeatedly absorbed into another before mysteriously vanishing and reappearing inside a spectator's sleeve. You'll also learn the exceptionally clean coin matrix he performed on television, along with his remarkable closer: a card-to-orange routine featuring a hands-off vanish of a selected card and an ingenious production of an orange.

Sponge Ball Magic: Dean shares an exceptionally practical routine that can be performed under nearly test conditions—the same routine he regularly used in his strolling performances. You'll also discover his ingenious flashlight routine, in which a sponge ball is seemingly produced from and vanished into a beam of light. Although the original props for that routine are no longer available, Dean's thinking and techniques can be applied to virtually any sponge ball routine, making familiar magic feel fresh and astonishing.

Matrix Magic: Dean was one of the world's foremost authorities on matrix magic, and you'll learn some of his finest work. One of his personal favorites uses nothing more than ordinary coins and a table napkin to create an astonishing series of impossibilities. You'll also learn the formal matrix he performed for Johnny Carson and his legendary matrix finale, X-plosion.

Card Magic: Discover one of Dean's favorite strolling routines, in which ANY named playing card is produced using an ordinary 52-on-1 gag card as the perfect lead-in. It's a wonderful example of Dean's ability to turn a simple premise into a powerful piece of magic.

Close-Up Miracles: Learn Dean's amazing bill-to-sugar-packet routine, along with his showstopping handling of John Cornelius's Pen Through Anything. Dean considered the latter one of the greatest close-up effects ever created, and his handling demonstrates why. Best of all, it can be used with any current versions of this classic.

The Linking Ropes: Two ordinary ropes pass momentarily behind your head and emerge impossibly linked at their centers. This impromptu miracle works equally well for a handful of spectators or an audience of hundreds. In fact, it was this very routine that inspired Dean to create Dean's Box. Imagine Dean's Box—without the box!

Intimate Miracles sn't simply a collection of clever tricks. It's a treasury of powerful, practical magic from a performer who understood the difference between fooling someone and creating an unforgettable experience.

There's a reason legends such as Dai Vernon, Larry Jennings, Michael Skinner, Michael Weber, Mike Caveney, and John Carney made the pilgrimage to a tiny California barbershop to experience Dean's magic firsthand. Now, with Intimate Miracles finally available again, you can discover the routines, methods, and thinking that drew these legendary magicians to Dean's barbershop to see real magic.
